Meet Mrs. Kimberly
I am Kimberly Downie, founder of Seed to Forest Literacy. I am a Certified - Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist. I pursued formal training and certification in structured literacy through my own experience as a parent of a struggling reader.
My goal as a literacy therapist is to help each student build their skills step-by-step as a path to gaining confidence and developing fluency. Learning to be a fluent reader is not an overnight process, and I have a passion for engaging students, making class time fun, and helping students understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. I strive to always be patient, encouraging and supportive of my students and expect them to give their best while I give them MY best.
I have my Bachelor's of Science from the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. I have over 10 years of homeschooling, small group class instructor, in-person tutoring and online tutoring experience, ranging from preschoolers through high school. I have also taught thousands of online English and literacy classes to students ranging from kindergarten to middle school.
I can't wait to meet your student!
Meet Mrs. Leslie
"I have had the privilege of working with children from kindergarten through 10th grade as a foster parent, tutor, and classroom teacher. In 2013, I began implementing a structured literacy program in the classroom, and was continually amazed by the growth students achieved when given strong foundational literacy skills. Experiencing this progress inspired me to become a reading therapist, where I continue to support students in building confidence and the necessary skills to become successful as readers."
Meet Ms. Laura
"I'm a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist and I love my job! I believe every student comes to the table with their own unique strengths and I aim to celebrate and build upon those strengths during our sessions together. As a teacher, I think it's important to continue being a student myself, so I'm always learning new things and challenging myself. I empathize with my students' struggles and admire them for the hard work they put in, and I strive to create a fun, supportive atmosphere where it's safe to take risks and grow. I have seen structured literacy turn struggling students into readers and I'm honored to be a part of that process. There's nothing better than seeing students surprise themselves with what they can do!
Some other stuff about me: I'm a proud native St. Louisan now living in Phoenix, Arizona. At the moment, I love exploring the Arizona desert, dancing, musical theater, and researching family history. I'm looking forward to meeting you and your student!"
What is Structured Literacy?

Reading
Our literacy therapy uses the research-backed Structured Literacy/Orton-Gillingham approach in order to provide lessons that are...
- Systematic - Lessons are taught in a specific order, building from easier to more difficult.
- Explicit - Students are directly taught what they need to know for each lesson. There is no guessing about what their therapist is wanting them to do!
- Cumulative - Lessons build on each other and frequently review previously taught concepts.
- Diagnostic - Student needs and challenges are informally assessed throughout each lesson and formally assessed periodically.
- Prescriptive - Lessons are adjusted in real time, as well as future lessons, based on the diagnostic assessments.
- Multisensory - Students incorporate visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic teaching tools throughout the sessions.
- Phonics-based - Lessons are founded on the basics of phonemic awareness and phonics to provide students a solid foundation in letters and sounds.

Spelling
Spelling can be a challenge even for students who read well. As always, we use a Structured Literacy approach to spelling in order to help students understand WHY English words are spelled the way they are. We teach them the rules and patterns in English and continously practice applying those patterns and rules. High frequency words (sight words) are taught by noticing which part of the word is "regular" and which part is "irregular" and focusing on how to spell these words. We do not simply "memorize" them!

Handwriting
Students learn proper letter formation, as needed, to build automaticity in writing. This helps them be able to focus on other aspects of literacy (spelling, punctuation, content) because their handwriting will become automatic with practice and within the spelling and writing process.
